A Brief Introduction to Fine Arts Academy
The School of Fine Arts grew out of the Department of Picture Drawing of Central China Normal College established in 1952, was then resumed as Department of Fine Arts in 1985, and was finally established as the School of Fine Arts on the basis of the formal department in April 2004. The school consists of the Department of Fine Arts, Art Design, Visual Arts, the Center of City Image and Contemporary Arts and the Art Institute of Culture. Now it opens five undergraduate majors including the Arts Education (Fine Art), Visual Communication Design, Environmental Design, Animation and Drawing, and two postgraduate programs involving Fine Arts and Design Arts. In 2008, the Fine Arts was constructed as a project toward one of the key disciplines of Hubei Province.
In the School of Fine Arts, there are 72 staff members, 59 professional teachers including 21 professors and associate professors, 32 lecturers and 6 assistants. More than 90 percent of the teachers have got master’s degree and/or doctor’s degree. There are 10 master instructors among in-service teachers. We have undertaken and completed planning projects of the National Social Science Foundation, Humanities and Social Science Planning Project from Ministry of Education and many other social science research projects from Hubei Province. Works from both teachers and students have participated in domestic and international exhibitions and have gotten many awards. The School of Fine Arts, as an important base for education and research in central China, have trained a large number of outstanding teachers and specialized personnel. In addition, the employment rate of graduates has maintained at above 95% in recent years.
The School of Fine Arts, to meet the goal of establishing a high-standard comprehensive and research-based higher educational institution featuring teachers’ education, has made an overall development plan for multiple disciplines, and reestablished the general target for its construction and development. By doing so, it seeks to give prominence to art education, while actively expanding development space for design, animation and plastic arts, so as to build the school into a first-class research-based and innovation-oriented institution which combines art education and creation with applied arts.

I. A Brief Introduction to Fine Arts Major
The Art Education Major was reestablished in Central China Normal University (CCNU) in 1985, and began to recruit students in 1986. The major was directed to be renamed Fine Arts (Teacher Education) Major in 1998. It was changed into Art (Fine Art) Education Major according to the newly issued undergraduate catalogue in 2012.
Art Education Major is undergraduate brand one of general colleges and universities in Hubei Province, and also an important base for training art teachers in Central China. At present, the department has a staff of 53 professional teachers, among which full and associate professors amount to over 20, 10 master’s supervisors and possesses Visual Art Experiment Center, Exhibition Hall, Books and Reference Materials Center, all sorts of painting studios and the like in the teaching building of 15000 square meters, sets up more than 100 courses for students altogether.


II. Educational Objectives
This major is designed to cultivate students to become high qualified professional talents mastering basic artistic theories and knowledge as well as specialized expressive skill, having educational and teaching theories and knowledge and abilities to teach and research.


III. Basic Requirements
Graduates of this major principally learn the basic theories and knowledge, receive the basic training of teaching skill, artistic expression, design and manufacture and writing, and are capable of undertaking the basic artistic teaching, spreading, creation, design and manufacture.
Graduates of this major are expected to have the following knowledge and skills:
1. Knowing systematically the basic theories, knowledge and skills of fine art major as well as pedagogy.
2. An ability to undertake basic artistic teaching inside / outside classroom, participate in the construction of campus culture and environment, research basically the artistic teaching, and develop and design artistic course.
3. Knowing relevant economical, cultural and artistic guiding principles, policies, laws and regulations.
4. An ability to appreciate and criticize the works of art, and take part in the activities of artistic creation and artistic studies.
5. Being provided with humanism mind and modern educational ideas, higher artistic accomplishment and aesthetic level, and the abilities to pursue life-long study and learning attitude to inquiry.
6. Mastering a foreign language and computer technology application, and arriving at regulated grade.
7. Knowing the development of internal and external art education, mastering the basic methods of document retrieve, material inquiry and obtaining relevant information by modern information technology, and being able to carry out the activities of art education.

X. Explanations

1. On the first and second semester, the major basic courses are the same as painting, visual communication, environmental

design and animation;

2. At the last two semesters, we offer three major course modules of Chinese painting, oil painting and printmaking for student to choose;
3. Students are advised to choose the courses of Art Curriculum Design Evaluate, Basic Photography, History of Chinese and Western Education to gain credits of elective course.
4. We have 30 credits which are divided into two parts: required courses and elective courses. Among that Chinese painting, oil painting, printmaking and fine art theory courses should be gained 21 credits together.
5. Student must finish educational practice, field scenery painting, and professional investigation etc..
6. In this 4 years, our students should regulation credits, including 107professional credits, 3 educational credits, and accomplish Laboratory and Practice. In addition, the students should meet the foreign language requirements set by the Central China Normal University. In the fourth-year after the students accomplish graduation design and graduation design Report, they get graduation permission from the university. The university grants the students degree who meet requirements for Bachelor of Arts.
