I. A Brief Introduction to Chinese Language and Literature Major
When the Department of Chinese Literature of Wenhua Private College of Humanities and Sciences was initially founded in 1909, courses related to the traditional Chinese philology were offered. In the 1950s, the Center for Language Teaching and Research was set up in the Chinese Department where such courses as Modern Chinese, Ancient Chinese and Introduction to Linguistics were taught by the old generation of scholars with a profound accumulation of knowledge. The department has achieved fruitful accomplishments in the study of Chinese language.
In the 1980s, the Institute of Linguistics was established with affiliated Logic of Chinese Syntax Laboratory, Chinese Dialect Laboratory and Exegetics Laboratory. The journal Linguistics Communication was edited and published for 12 consecutive years, making a great contribution to the research in Modern Chinese, especially in Grammar, and thus enjoying a high reputation in China. In 1999, the Department of Linguistics was founded, rendering it the first language department in China targeted at teaching and researching our mother tongue Chinese. At the same time, undergraduates began to be enrolled in the Chinese Language major. For more than a decade, the major has achieved remarkable achievements in teaching and scientific research, and its graduates have also attained good results in language research and teaching.
This major is currently staffed with more than 20 professors, associate professors, and lecturers, of whom more than 10 are PhD and Master’s supervisors. The staff members are with sharp competitiveness, undertaking many national and provincial projects, and winning many corresponding awards. In this major, Modern Chinese is a state-level high-quality course, Introduction to Linguistics, provincial excellent course, and Ancient Chinese, provincial good-quality course.


II. Educational Objectives
This major is designed to cultivate interdisciplinary talents specialized in Chinese language and literature with a systematic and solid foundation of Chinese linguistics, with a mastery of the basic theories and methods of linguistics, with the preliminary ability in the study of languages, and at the same time with a certain ability in cross-cultural communication, thus with the competency to be engaged in the work related to Chinese language in the areas of culture, education, publishing, media organizations, government agencies, enterprises, and institutions.


III. Basic Requirements
Students in this major mainly study the basic theories of linguistics and the basic knowledge of the Chinese language, receive the basic training in humanities, social sciences as well as linguistics, master the basic abilities in language survey and analysis, creative thinking, scientific research in this area, and the comprehensive employment of the acquired knowledge for social practice.Graduates of this major are expected to have the following knowledge and skills:
1. A mastery of basic theories and knowledge in linguistics, and of basic knowledge in Chinese language;
2. A mastery of the basic skills of in the survey of Chinese dialects;
3. Basic abilities in written communication, popularization of knowledge in Humanities, the discovery, analysis and settlement of problems in this field with the application of professional knowledge;
4. A familiarity with the national policies and regulations in regards to languages;
5. An understanding of the theoretical frontiers and development trends in this subject, and a relatively broad cultural vision;
6. Capabilities of keeping abreast of new knowledge, conducting scientific research, doing practical work and a certain level of creative thinking skills.

IX. Community Education

Students who participate in the training of scientific research projects, publish papers in core journals, win awards at the provincial level or above, acquire

professional level certificates or applied skills certificates, etc, will be granted credits according to the relevant rules. 3 credits is set up and recognized independently by SCLL with specific reference to the Implementation Measures of Quality Extension Credit System by SCLL.

X. Explanations

1. All the courses of this major from the terms 1-4 and part of the courses in term 5 are the same with those of the Chinese Language and Literature (normal and non-normal) majors and Chinese in International Education major.

2. This major is oriented into 2 areas, that is, Chinese language and philology, and linguistics and applied linguistics. Students are advised to obtain credits in specialized courses in a certain area according to their own interests.

Students oriented to Chinese language and philology are advised to take the following courses: philology, phonology, exegetics, experimental phonetics, study of modern Chinese vocabulary, study of modern Chinese grammar, study of ancient Chinese vocabulary, study of ancient Chinese grammar, and Chinese dialectology, etc.

Students oriented to linguistics and applied linguistics are advised to take the following courses: Logic of Language, Computational Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, History of Chinese Linguistics, History of Western Linguistics, Language and Social Culture, Experimental Phonetics, Comparative Linguistics, Monographic Study of Linguistics, etc.

3. Students are advised to take courses in English, History, Education, Computer Sciences, Arts, Sociology, and etc. for credits in general education elective courses.

4. Students are required to obtain 25 credits from general education courses, 19 credits from specialized core courses, and 14 credits from specialized oriented courses.

5. The teaching practice is arranged in the 7th semester with 16 credits, while the 2-week teaching observation is scheduled in the vacation of the 5th semester.

6. Students in this major can only graduate after they obtain prescribed credits within the prescribed length of schooling, that is, they shall obtain at least 100 course credits, acquire 3 credits in the community education, complete all the laboratory and/or practice, meet the foreign language requirements at the CCNU and pass the defense of the graduation thesis. Those who meet all the requirements of the school will be conferred a Bachelor of Arts degree.
