. Introduction of the Major

The Major of Geography has a long history, which originated from the Major of History and Geography at Private Central China University established in 1924. It started to recruit geography undergraduates in 1956, and then the Department of Geography was established in 1958. Over half a century, The Department of Geography has experienced four stages - the period of entrepreneurship’s foundation, the period of steady development, the period of maintaining development, the period of breakthrough development.

The Department has a large numbers of all-round academics, including the winners ofNational teaching achievement prizes, the members ofthe Science Teaching Guidance Committee of Ministry of Education, the core members ofthe Ordinary High School Geography Curriculum Standards Compilation Groupof Ministry of Education, the members ofthe High School Geography New Curriculum Training Expert Groupof Ministry of Education, the standing director ofthe Geography Teaching Research association of Chinese Education Society,the deputy director of Geography Teaching Theory Academic Committee of National Normal University, the directors and standing director of Geographical Society of China, the deputy director of Medical Geography Academic Committee, the member of Human Geography Academic Committee, the member of Historical Geography Academic Committee, the deputy director of National GIS Proficiency Test Committee of Experts, the president of Geography Society of Hubei Province, the deputy director of Li Siguang’s Research Society of Hubei Province, the prominent teachers of Hubei Province and so forth.

The Major of Geography’s curriculumowns complete experimental teaching system to support.At present,the experiment teaching center for undergraduates has already formed such four experimental platforms as the geographicalprocess, geographical education, geographical technology, geographical application, 20 indoor laboratories, 2 field practice bases and 6 off-campus education practice bases led by CUES.

The Major of Geography is the affiliated units of Geography Society of Hubei Province, Li Siguang’s Research Society of Hubei Province, Geography Society of Wuhan. With half a century of development, the professional characteristics has come into being in this major, such as‘embodying the characteristics of interdisciplinarity, emphasizing the training of students' comprehensive quality; reflecting the characteristics of teacher education, highlighting the training of students' teaching ability; incarnating the characteristics of social demand, stressing the cultivation of students' innovative spirit; embodying individualized teaching, underlining the training of student’s individual strengths’.Since 1956, this major has already fostered more than 3000 geographical professional talents, and has become the cradle of geography teachers in Hubei province.

. Educational Objectives

The major aims to foster high-quality professional talents with well-knit theoretical foundation of modern geographic sciences, comprehensive basal knowledge, skilled basic skills, and mastering teaching ability, who meet the demand of development of modern geography teaching, have excellent morals and academic skills, and have developmental potential of future educators.

. Essential Requirements

The students should learn and master the fundamental geographical, pedagogical theory and knowledge, accept the basic training of geographical sciences research and geography education methods and skills, so that they possess the basic ability to work ongeography education and geographical scientific research.

The students should have the following abilities and qualities before obtaining bachelor degree:

1.Having Perfect ideological and moral qualities, solidarity and cooperation spirits, communicate skills,aesthetic and practical abilities,physical andpsychological quality, and establishing proper view of nature, world outlook, philosophy and view of value.

2.Mastering fundamental principle and method on geographical teaching, possessing good teachers’ quality, mastering modern educational and teaching technique expertly, being qualified for geographical education under the new situation.

3.Mastering basic knowledge, theory, methods and skills of the geographical sciences, knowing about the frontier and trends in the development of geographical sciences, having certain ability to be independently engaged in geography education scientific research.

Physical Geography, Human Geography, Economic Geography, Cartography, Introduction to Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System, Introduction to Planet Earth, Fundamentals of Geology, Meteorology and Climatology, Geomorphology, Hydrology and Water Resources, Soil Geography, Phytogeography, Geography of China, World Geography, Analysis of Geographical Teaching and so forth.

. Practical Education

1.Practical and Experimental Teaching Processes

(The credit distribution of practical and experimental teaching processes: Humanities and Social Sciences’ credits shall not be less than 15% of the total credits; Science and Technology’s credits shall not be less than 25% of the total credits.)

①Community Education’s Platform

1. Each student should take 4 credits at least.

2. Identified credits of community education’s platform

(1) Credits for the training of third semester. 1 credit for qualifier in the training of third semester.

(2) Credits for Research, Including3 credits for the first participator completing College Students’ Project of Innovation and Business-starting on time, 2 credits for second and third participator, 1 credit for third and fourth participator; 3 credits for author of the paper published in the journals admitted by CCNU; 2 credits for those who take part in teacher’s research project and submit report, and get the positive opinion of the teacher.

(3) Credits for reward, including 3 credits for the rewards above provincial level ;1 credit for the rewards of CCNU (e.g. Merit Students).

(4) Credits for certificates, including 2 credits for a professional certificate, or for a technical certificate.

(5) Credits for academic lectures, including 1 credit for attending eight academic lectures and submitting reports on time during term 1 to 7.

(6)Credits for business-starting activities, including 2 credits for the business-starting program proposed by students and admitted by the teaching office of the College and implemented for three months or more, finally submitting report and being allowed to finish the project.

(7) Credits for community service,including 2 credits for the the community service program proposed by students and admitted by the teaching office of the College and implemented for three months or more, finally providing evidence and submitting report.

3. Each teach should spend one hour per week(i.e. altogether 150 to 160 hours for three years ) in instructing students’ community education.

. Supplementary

1. The curriculum has altogether 158 credits, thereinto in-class curriculum has 130 credits. Since the general curriculum is arranged by the school, so distribution table of courses and credits in this program may differ from the actual situation at each semester, and this table is for reference only. For example, the distribution of University English’s credits(12 credits) is calculated by the grade C, each semester has 4 credits from first semester to third semester. The distribution of University Sports Club’s credits(4 credits) is 1 credits at each semester from first semester to fourth semester.

2. University English has 12 credits. It implements test when students enter the school and students is divided into three levels of teaching(grade C - the basal level, grade B - the raising level and grade A - the developmental level). The interpretations are in Implementation Plan of University English’s classification teaching of CCNU. Grade C includes General English Courses with 12 credits at 3 semesters. Grade B includes General English Courses with 8 credits at 2 semesters and General Education Courses in English with 4 credits at 1 semester. Grade C includes General English Courses with 4 credits at 1 semester, General Education Courses in English with 4 credits at 1 semester and Special English Courses with 4 credits at 1 semester. In addition, all students need to attend one or two courses of their own major in English during school.

3. There are 2 credits for Freshman Seminar. The specific arrangements are stipulated by school’s Implementation Plan of Freshman Seminar.

4. University Sports implements Club Teaching System. Students need to take club’s course with 4 credits at 4 semesters at least. The specific arrangements are stipulated by school’s Regulation of University Sports Club. In the meantime, each student should finish 4 tests (once a year) of National Student Physical Health Standard. The specific arrangements are stipulated by Department of Education’s Basic Standards of Colleges sports’ work. The specific arrangements of Sports Club are stipulated by Reform and Implementation’s Programs of University Sports’ Club Teaching System of CCNU.

5. Information application ability must be identified by school before graduation. There are three ways to acquire qualification: the first way is passing the text organized by the school at the time of enrollment; the second way is getting the certificate of National Computer Rank Examination; the third way is taking the course of Computer Basics with 2 credits setting by school for the students who don’t pass the text or get the certificate. The first two ways to acquired information application ability’s qualification can display “pass” but without credit in Academic Performance Database. The third way to acquired information application ability’s qualification can regarded as taking optional elective course with 2 credits in Academic Performance Database, but non-free normal students should charge fees for credits.

6. The General Education’s Core Curriculum is stipulated by school. Credits are compulsory and courses are elective. Students select different modules’ courses from the directory of The General Education’s Core Curriculum. The students of this major should respectively select the courses in three modules including Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Philosophy and Social Sciences, and Humanities and Arts. But students can’t select the similar courses with their own major.

7. The General Education’s Common Elective Curriculum with 3 credits can be selected in The General Education’s Core Curriculum or The General Education’s Elective Curriculum. Students can select courses freely and the choice of module is not limited by current classification system of The General Education’s Elective Curriculum. Students can also select the course of other majors.

8. The Personality Development’s Courses demands that the students of this major should select The Module of Teaching Education’s Curriculum with 16 credits and The Major’s Elective Curriculum with 9 credits. The students can get 1 credit by passing the test of teaching spoken language and teaching handwriting. The students should finish 10 credits by teaching practice (educational noviciate and educational internships).

9. Educational practice include graduation thesis with 6 credits, educational noviciate with 2 credits, educational internships with 8 credits. College encourages to carry out the educational practice including educational noviciate, educational internships and educational research more than 1 semester. Some mandatory classes and elective classes of this major need to conduct experiments or noviciate. The field practice of comprehensive physical geography with 2 credits and 3 weeks is scheduled at summer holidays of the forth semester; The educational noviciate with 2 credits and 2 weeks is scheduled at the sixth semester; The educational internships with 8 credits and 10 weeks is scheduled at the seventh semester; The writing of graduation thesis with 6 credits and 6 weeks is scheduled at the eighth semester.

10. The Quality Development’s Courses with 5 credits include the course of situation and policies, the course of college students’ employment guidance, the course of college students’ mental health and so on.

11. Students should finish 2 blended teaching courses at least before graduation.

12. After getting 16 credits of teaching education’s courses, teaching spoken language’s test, teaching handwriting’s test and educational practice, students can acquire minor certificate through finishing the minor courses stipulated by the major of pedagogy and educational technology with 10 credits; students can acquire relevant bachelor's degree through finishing the minor courses stipulated by the major of pedagogy and educational technology with 24 credits, and finishing the minor courses’ graduation thesis.

13. The students of this major should finish 158 credits before the deadline, including major courses with 130 credits, field practice with 2 credits, educational noviciate with 2 credits, educational internships with 8 credits and Community Education’s Platform with 4 credits, meanwhile pass the test of English and Sports, and meet the requirement of graduates of CCNU, and pass the Graduation thesis defense with 6 credits, then the students can be granted graduation. The eligible students can be granted degree of science.

14. The students can acquire minor certificate and dual degree by respectively finishing the 28 credits and 42 credits of the courses, which select from the core curriculum of major.
