About the School

The school of Life Sciences is one of the earliest schools at Central China Normal University and can be dated back to the Department of Biology in Huazhong University founded in 1924. It was formally established in May 1995. The school now consists of 2 departments: Department of Biological Sciences and Department of Biotechnology. Affiliated to the school are also the Key Laboratory of Genetic Regulation and integrative Biology in Hubei Province, the provincial model center for Biological Experiments (including nine Teaching Laboratories), and Museum of Plants and Animal Specimen. With 26 professors and 32 associate professors, the school offers bachelor programs in Biological Sciences, Biotechnology and Chemistry-Biology (co-sponsored by The School of Chemistry); master programs in Biology, Agro-insect & Pest control, and Environmental Science; and doctoral programs in Botany and Zoology. Currently, about 1,300 full-time students register in the school for various programs, including 900 undergraduate and 400 graduate students. Along with the rapid progress in life science fields, the school is developing rapidly with the recent recruitment of many young scientists.

The school helps students prepare for careers in research, teaching, industry, government, medicine, medical technology, and several other health-related fields. The school has established experiment and teaching centers, and research and training laboratories, which are fully equipped with advanced instruments for biological research and teaching skill training, including conventional instruments for regular teaching as well as advanced equipments and modern facilities for training research ability. All teaching and research laboratories provide all dimensional supports for students in their spare-time research and graduation theses research, so that students have many opportunities to improve their experimental skills and gradually achieve their research accomplishments.

The school not only emphasizes consistently on teaching, but also pays great attention to research. Areas of research in the school include: Molecular Genetics; Animal Function & Biomedical Basis; Environmental Sciences, Ecology & Conservation and Utilization of Bio-resource; Biological Teaching & Course Reform. The scientific research level of the entire school is continuously improving. In recent five years, the school has undertaken 65 research grants from National Natural Science Foundation, and 27 projects from National Key Basic Research Project, National High Tech Project, international cooperative research programs, and research and development programs from local governments and enterprises. Annual research budget is around 16.0 million RMB. Since 2008, our faculty have published over 600 research papers in Chinese and international journals and 50 textbooks and monographs, filed 25 patent applications and won 6 provincial second-class awards in natural sciences.

In order to widen the research areas and keep up with the advances in life sciences, the school has established academic collaborations and intercommunications with many universities and institutions, such as those in USA, Canada, U.K., France, Germany, Russia, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Many foreign scholars and researchers are invited to visit the school each year. Meantime, more than ten teachers per year go abroad for cooperation, communion, giving lectures, visitation, attending in advanced studies and international conferences.

I. Program Overview

The non-normal program in biotechnology was approved and established by the Ministry of Education. It was formerly the program in biochemistry established in 1995. In 1998, the undergraduate majors were adjusted, and this program was renamed biotechnology. The program in biotechnology has directions in medical biotechnology, environmental biotechnology and basic biotechnology.

This program offers high-quality education for degrees of bachelor, master and doctor. Our laboratories and classrooms are equipped with up-to-date instruments worth more than 30 million yuan. Also, with the modern educational idea of “Knowledge, Ability, Quality”, we emphasize on combining theory and practice, and offer many opportunities of research to students. Moreover, we pay great attention to creating a lively academic atmosphere. We have a lot of cooperative research and academic exchanges with European and American universities, research institutions and international academic institutions, and Chinese top universities and research institutions. With in-depth study, field-based experience, and various extracurricular academic activities, we manage to prepare students with advanced knowledge and skills. Our program is characterized by the principle of “Internationally-Oriented, Frontiers-Oriented, Market-Oriented”. We aim at cultivating compound, practical and innovative talents who possess international perspective and academic leadership.

We have been approved to cooperate with Swinburne University of Technology for an international study program. The students in the study program will have the opportunity to study in Swinburne University of Technology, and also the opportunity to work with the teachers from that university in China. Qualified students will be awarded diploma and/or degree certificate by Central China Normal University and Swinburne University of Technology.

We have also set up an undergraduate-level project under Hubei Province Emerging (Pillar) Industries Strategic Personnel Training Plan. The project closely cooperates with related companies, focusing on preparing advanced talents who know the biotechnology theories, skills and present situation of the industry, and who are capable of researching, applying and innovating. This project also aims to develop talents with the ability to meet the needs of the society and the market, as well as responsibility and dedication.

We have built websites for students’ self-learning of the provincial quality courses and bilingual model courses.


II. Educational Objectives

Our mission is to help students become leaders in the field of biotechnology. Students will grasp the basic theories and skills, and be capable of learning, researching, applying and innovating. Also, students will be skilled in the basics of science, and have an international perspective. Besides, they will be ideologically and politically qualified, and accomplish basic humanities and sciences.

Graduates can be researchers, technology developers, teachers and managers in related industries such as biotechnology, research and education, and meanwhile can be prepared to be excellent master’s and doctor’s students.


III. Program Requirements

Graduates of this program should acquire the following qualities, knowledge and skills:

1. Sound moral quality, professional ethics, social responsibility, team spirit and judgment.

2. Basics of mathematics, physics, chemistry and computer, as well as basic knowledge of humanities.

3. Basic knowledge and skills of biotechnology, as well as basic capability to develop products and conduct experiments in biotechnology and related fields.

4. Present situation of biotechnology research, development and application, as well as policies and regulations on biotechnology and its related industries.

5. International perspective, competitiveness and team spirit; strong ability to learn and innovative spirit; ability to do research, potential to meet the needs of the society and further the study; basic ability to respond to crises and emergencies.

6. Mental and physical health, strong mind, and good skills of communication and expression.

IX. Community Education
As CCNU encourages students to take part in activities of community education in order to improve the students’ innovative spirit and ability of application, the teaching committee of the School of Life Sciences have has made policies of giving credits to students who engage in community education, innovation and entrepreneurship. Activities that can bring students credits include training in research projects, publishing articles in core journals, winning prizes at provincial and above levels, obtaining professional certificates and application skills certificates. Students should gain 3 credits for community education. Students who are acknowledged by the committee according to the following policies will be given certain credits.
1. Participating in training in research projects: 2 credits for participating in type A and B projects and finishing them on time; 0.5 credits for participating in type C projects and finishing them on time.
2. Winning prizes of provincial and above levels: 5 credits for national first prize; 4 credits for national second prize; 3 credits for national third prize; 4 credits for provincial first prize; 3 credits for provincial second prize; 2 credits for provincial third prize; 2 credits for university first prize; 1 credit for university second prize; 0.5 credits for university third prize.
3. Publishing professional articles: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 credits for first, second, third, fourth, fifth author of SCI articles; 3, 2, 1 credits for first, second, third author of articles in core journals; 2, 1 credits for first, second author of articles in other journals.
4. Obtaining patents for inventions: 3 credits for obtaining patents for inventions
5. Obtaining professional certificates: 2 credits for teacher certificate; 2, 1 credits for NCRE Grade 3, 2; 1 credit for CET-6; 3, 1 credits for the national qualification of psychological counseling Grade 2, 3; 3 credits for at least one year’s overseas study.
6. Participating in teachers’ research projects: 2 credits for participating in teachers’ research projects for two years and getting approval from the teachers.


X. Explanations
1. Some of the specialized basic courses of this program are the same as those of the program in Biological Sciences.
2. Students should take at least 4 credits in general electives, including humanities and art, and social sciences. Students should not take courses same as or similar to the specialized courses of this program. Students are advised to take electives of this program for the rest of the credits. Following certain policies, students can offset the credits for community education by credits gained in courses of minors.
3. The program in biotechnology has directions in medical biotechnology, environmental biotechnology and basic biotechnology. The direction of medical biotechnology includes courses such as Methods for new drug development, Biological pharmaceutical technology, Inspection and Quarantine technology for drug and food, Enzymology, Microbial engineering, Cell engineering and Quantitative cytology; the direction of environmental biotechnology includes courses such as Environmental biology, Toxicology, Environmental biotechnology and Environmental monitoring and evaluation; students who choose the direction of basic biotechnology are advised to take courses such as English in biology, biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Developmental biology, Neurobiology, Genomics and Biological Seminars with visiting professionals.
4. The total credits for this program is 100, which consist of 30 credits for common courses, 25 credits for required general courses, 12 credits for general electives, 22 credits for required specialized courses, 8 credits for specialized electives, and 3 credits for community education.
5. Students should practice in biotechnology companies or research institutions, and get passed in the practices.
6. Students who are qualified for graduation should meet the following requirements: gain required credits within 4 years, which consist of 97 credits for required and elective courses and 3 credits for community education; complete all the required practice and experiment activities; English language examination meets the standard for bachelor’s degree of CCNU; pass the thesis defense. The students who are qualified will be awarded the degree of bachelor of science.
