Ⅰ. Brief Introduction to the Department of French
Founded in 2007 with the endorsement of the Ministry of Education, the Department of French of the School of Foreign Language and Literature obtained the authority in granting master degree in French Language and Literature in 2011. Our department has 6 professional teachers, 3 foreign teachers, which was rationally structured. This mission of this major is to cultivate all-rounded talents who have a good command of French and with overall high quality and expensive knowledge. And the study goes to three predominant aspects of French literature, French Language Science and Translatology, forming an integrated teaching system. Our department enrolls over 30 undergraduate students and 4 to 6 postgraduate students from nationwide every year. Furthermore, we actively conduct and join academic exchange activities and we have signed agreements with overseas prestigious universities for intercollegiate cooperation and exchange such as Université Paris Nord and Université de Montréal.


Ⅱ. Objective
Our department aims at cultivating specialized talents who have strong ability of using French, profound literary background, high comprehensive quality and are familiar with French culture, and they are able to undertake foreign affairs-concerned jobs in all fields such as translation, foreign affairs, foreign trade, education, research and management, etc.


Ⅲ. Basic Requirements
The students in this major mainly study French linguistics, French literature, elementary knowledge of French and the countries and regions French language is spoken. By accepting basic training such as listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation, they acquire verbal and written communication skills in French as well as the fundamental skill of applying French to intercultural communication.
Our graduates are required to master the following knowledge and skills:
1. They should master pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, literature of French and the basic knowledge of Frenchand the countries and regions French language is spoken. And they should have a god knowledge of Chinese language and culture.
2. They should discover and analyze the practical problems of cross-cultural communication using their knowledge acquired from French study.
3. They should be capable of tackling the problems previously mentioned and of doing research.
4. They should be able to keep up with the future development of French language, literature, culture and the industry they work for.
5. They should possess good political quality, being familiar with the legislation, principles and policies concerning diplomacy, foreign affairs, foreign trade, culture, education and communication of our country or the regions they work for, so as to consciously maintain a high degree of unity with the Party and government.
6. They should master the basic knowledge in linguistics, literature, culture and the skill of doing research in Humanities and Sciences. They should have a relatively high level of level of humanistic quality, fine ideological and ethical quality, strong sense of laws and awareness of honesty, besides, they should be both mentally and physically healthy.
7. They should have a good knowledge of scientific technology (especially modern information technology) and have critical thinking skills. They should be familiar with some other knowledge and skills that can better serve their job.

Humanity, art and PE

Students select course form the programs of Humanities & Arts and Sports, Social Science, and Natural Science. Minimum 12 credits is required for general elective course platform. It’s advised to take course of different programs. Students can’t select course repeatedly or course similar to what they’ve taken previously. Ⅸ. Platform for Social-Group Education
1. Students of this major may be approved to graduate only after receiving 3 academic credits for innovation.
2. Students may attain 1 academic credit for each of the following achievements:
① Publications of academic writings (dissertation or translation) on journals.
②Establishments of scientific research project of university or higher level.
③Pass TFS-4
④Pass TFS-8
⑤Pass National Computer Rank Examination (NCRE)
⑥Chinese Mandarin Test, not lower than Band 2B
⑦Certification of China Accreditation Test for French Translators and Interpreters (CATTI2)
⑧Certification of CATTI 3
⑨Being awarded at least the third prize in subgroup of French, Translation and Interpretation Contest of Hubei Province
⑩ Be in the finals of National French Speech Contest or any state-level French-concerned contests.
3. Other types of credits acquired from such as innovations or starting one’s own business credited by the school could also be included in the total credits.


Ⅹ. Note
1. There are several minors recommended for French major students to take such as education, English, economics and foreign literature and so on in response to the general education discipline.
2.The academic credits of this major consist of 30credits, 24.5 credits, 22.5 credits, 21 credits, 9 credits and 3credits respectively from Common Required Course, General Selected Course (Required), General Selected Course (Optional), Professional Curriculum (Required) and Practice and Experiment.
3. Required credits of any of General Selected Course (Optional) is 12, of which the natural science courses should count for 4 credits, the art and PE courses should count for 2 credits and the humanities and social science courses 6 credits.
4. Students of this major should complete their probation and field practice during the seventh to the eighth semester, each being no less than one semester.
5. Students of the major shall graduate if they meet the requirements of credits in the prescribed semester with 107 course credits in total, 3 credits for Community Education, accomplish all the practice and teaching, meet the foreign language requirements at the CCNU, and pass the graduation thesis. Students who are qualified will be conferred with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
