Undergraduate Program for Information Management and Information System at School of Information Management
A Brief Introduction of School of Information Management
School of Information Management, Central China Normal University was developed from the Department of Library and Information Science in 1983. Its history can be dated back to 1920, when the Specialty of Library Science was established in Wenhua University by the Chinese Americans Ms. Wei Dihua, Mr. Shen Zurong and Mr. Hu Qingsheng(It developed into the College of Library Science independent from Wenhua University in 1930). Now there are 3 specialties for ordinary full-time undergraduates,10 master degree programmes and 2 doctoral degree programmes , with the total number of existing undergraduates, Master's degree candidates, Doctoral candidates and foreign students being more than 800. The faculty number by June, 2013 is 52, of whom 38 are full-time teachers, 16 professors, 15 associate professors, 9 doctoral supervisors and 20 master tutors. Among the many excellent teachers, there are two “Talents of the New Century” (awarded by the Ministry of Education), one “National Outstanding Teacher” and one “Famous Teacher in Hubei Province”. More than 95% of the full-time teachers have their doctorate and nearly half of the teachers have overseas experiences.
The School’s strength in scientific research has been improved greatly. By the end of 2012, the teachers have undertaken 3 key programs of the National Social Science Fund, 27 general programs and youth programs of the National Social Science Fund, 10 programs of the National Natural Science Fund, 24 programs of the Humanities and Social Science Fund of the Ministry of Education and many other programs commissioned by national ministries and local government (more than 30), the funds of which are more than 24 million Yuan. Since 2007, more than 500 articles have been published in CSSCI core journals. Besides, more than 100 academic monographs and more than 30 teaching materials have been published. These achievements have won more than 10 prizes, such as “the National E-commerce Competition Award”, “Outstanding Achievements in Social Science of Hubei Province” and “Natural Science Thesis Prize in Wuhan”.
Our School has a large number of research centers, bases and training centers. Currently there are 2 provincial research centers and bases, 5 university research centers, and 4 affiliated training centers. The professional documentation centers and libraries provided with a great variety of books and periodicals, together with the well-equipped teaching experimental centers, especially those high-level laboratories such as “Information Management and Information System Laboratory”, “E-commerce Laboratory”, “CA Security-authenticated Laboratory”and “Knowledge Exploration and Intelligent Services Laboratory”, which are powerful guarantees for the School's teaching and scientific research.
Our School has achieved remarkable results in discipline and specialty construction. Information Science is a key discipline in Hubei Province. Besides, Electronic Commerce is a brand specialty in Hubei province and one of the country's E-commerce model specialties. Our School has also won many honorary titles such as the “Famous E-Commerce Schools in China”. In the 2012 results of the discipline evaluation announced by the Ministry of Education, the first-class discipline Library Information Science and Archives Management under Information Resource Management ranked fifth in the country. Moreover, Information Management & Information System was named A+ specialty. As for the course construction, our School has one national top-quality curriculum project (E-commerce management), one national model course of bilingual demonstration (An Overview of E-commerce), and one national top-quality course of network education.
Adhering to the educational principle of “students orientation, teachers first”, our School actively promote the internationalization by developing extensive academic exchanges and cooperation with the United States, Britain, South Korea, Australia, Canada, Finland and other countries and carrying out the training mode “2+2” for undergraduates (a mode under which diploma and degree certificates acknowledged both at home and abroad are conferred for students meeting the graduation requirements) with the well-known universities in countries such as South Korea and Australia. Besides, our School has established the educational ideas and development direction of “seeking development through innovation, displaying strengths by originality” after accumulation and development of nearly 30 years. Moreover, aiming at constructing a training mode characterized by “a combination of art and science, an integration of related disciplines, the unity of theory and applied technologies”, we placed an emphasis on cultivating the students’ ability in practical manipulation, international communication and academic research so that the students would be more competitive.

I. A Brief Introduction to Information Management and Information System Major
Information Management & Information System, as a branch of the first-level disciplines under Management Science & Engineering, is a comprehensive discipline specializing in the theories and methods of the construction and management of information system. Composed by the cross-cutting subjects of management theories, systematic scientific methods and information technology, Information Management & Information System is one of the most important pillars of modern management theories and methods. In 2012, the specialty in our university was named as A + Specialty.
In nowadays information society, following the training principle of “enhanced foundation, high quality and ability” and facing the rise of net economy, this distinctive specialty starts from the industry and social demands, directs at innovation, and focuses on enhancing the comprehensive strengths, which intends to train undergraduates to be high-quality talents who are equipped with a good understanding of the theories of modern management, who are skilled in information system analysis, design and development and who have the ability of enterprise management and decision-making.
Among the 5 professors and 7 associate professors, there are 3 doctoral supervisors, 15 master tutors, one “Talent of the New Century” (awarded by the Ministry of Education), one “National Outstanding Teacher” and one “Famous Teacher in Hubei Province”.The specialty boasts of good teaching facilities and first-class teaching environment. School of Information Management of Central China Normal University is not only a professionals training base but a scientific research base certificated by the state administrative department of education and the professional administrative department. It also has an Experimental Teaching Center for teaching experiments and a number of experimental teaching projects.
II. Educational Objectives
1. In information era, the features of Information Management & Information System shows the integration of advanced management theory, modern management science and engineering science. Catering to the information-based activity, this specialty trains students in using methods of management science and engineering to tackle the problems in the real work and scientific researches, which involves the management, analysis, design, development and evaluation of information system and the optimal distribution of information resources. Meanwhile, it trains high-quality compound talents to engage in the analysis, design and practice of information system for enterprises and scientific research institutions, who will become high-grade management talents after a period of professional study and social practice.
III. Basic Requirements

Undergraduates of Information Management & Information System will learn the basic theories of economics, management, computer science and technology, and information system. Students will receive the basic training of scientific thinking, system analysis, and technological tools and they are to master the ability of acquiring and applying knowledge as well as the ability in innovation.
Undergraduates are expected:
1. To get a comprehensive knowledge of mathematics and science; to master the theories in management science and economics, and the skills in information technology;
2. To master the methods, technology and tools of planning, design, implementation and management of information system;
3. To acquire the particular practical ability and skills of information system;
4. To be familiar with the relevant policies, laws and regulations of economy management and information technology;
5. To know the theory and application frontier of this specialty; to master the current situation and trends of the development of informatization;
6. To acquire the basic ability of scientific research and practical work; to have the critical thinking.

Courses of Liberal Arts

1. Students are required to get at least 12 credits for selective courses. All the 12 credits are distributed as follows: 2 credits in the 2nd semester; 2 credits in the 3rd semester; 2 credits in the 4th semester; 3 in the 5th semester; and 3 credits in the 6th semester.

2. Students are suggested to select inter-disciplinary courses, courses of liberal arts and of science as well as courses of arts and sports. Students are not suggested to select major courses or other similar courses that as their selective courses for general education. Those credits obtained in the minor can be transferred to credits for the selective courses of general education according to the requirements.

X. Explanations
1. Computer Network offered for this major in the 3rd semester is identical with that of Information Resource Management and that of E-commerce. Management Operations Research in the 4th semester is identical with that of E-commerce. Information System Analysis and Design is identical with that of Information Resource Management. Information Analysis and Forecasting in the 6th semester is identical with that of Information Resource Management.
2. This major has two subdivisions: E-Commerce Technology and Application (Course Code begins with 45021) and E-Commerce Operation and Management (Course Code begins with 45022). Students are required to get 6 credits elective courses under their own subdivision and 7 credits for other elective courses (Course Code begins with 44920).
3. Students are suggested to select 4 credits for each of the three kinds of selective courses, namely, liberal arts, natural science and social science, with a total of 12 credits for selective courses for general education.
4. The courses consist of compulsory courses and selective courses. Compulsory courses consist of courses for public education, general education and specialty education. Selective courses consist of courses for general education and specialty education. 30 credits are required for compulsory courses for public education, 27 credits for compulsory courses for general education, 12 credits for selective courses for general education, 18 credits for compulsory courses for specialty education and 13 credits for selective courses for specialty education.
5. Students are required to complete in-class experiment courses. When there are over 16 teaching periods in one course, it should be set as a separate course. Thirty-two teaching periods makes up one credit for the experiment courses. Students are also expected to take part in social activities or practical activities in summer or winter vacations, participate in the professional practice organized by the school in the 7th semester and finish their graduation thesis or graduation project in the 8th semester.
6. All the qualified students who get all the required credits (100 credits for the courses and 3 for community education), complete all the required practice and internship, reach the required level of foreign languages and pass the oral defense can get their degree, Bachelor of Management.
