I. A Brief Introduction to the Major of GIS

CUES set up the Remote Sensing Teaching and Studying Studio in 1980s. The 1stsession of graduate student of natural geography majoring in remote sense direction was recruited in 1989; the 1stsession of graduate student majoring in cartography and geographic information system recruited in 2003; preparation for setting up undergraduate geographic information science started from 2003. With the improvement of the experimental teaching space and under the support of the National Ministry of Finance, the laboratory construction and research conditions of the geographic information system have been gradually strengthened since 2008. The Hubei Provincial Geographical Experimental Teaching Center established in 2011, including geographic information system laboratory, remote sensing and surveying laboratory, etc. At the same time, our college have owned the graphics workstation, GPS, big breadth scanners, plotters and some GIS software systems such as ArcGIS (including ArcMap, MapObjects, ArcIMS, ArcSDE, ArcEngine, ArcServer, etc.), AutoCAD, ERDAS, EPSW, MAPGIS and GEOSTAR, which are experimental and teaching facilities and provide powerful environment for establishment of undergraduate Geographic Information Science.

Before the setting up of the undergraduate GIS, many related curriculum had been open to students, such as the introduction of remote sensing, geographical information system, surveying and cartography, quantitative geography, GIS design and applications, cartography for tourism, which empower teaching staff and is the basis of the opening of the GIS. College has been recruiting quite a number of teachers on 3S(GIS, Remote Sense and GPS) since 2013, enlarging the GIS teaching staff.

In the latest years, under the support of National Natural Science Fund Commission, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education and some related provincial and municipal departments, the GIS teachers of CUES have been carrying out application research based on remote sensing and GIS. The field of the research includes LUCC and ecological environment effect based on remote sensing, analysis and simulation of land use process, the visualization of geographic data and multi-scale representation, urbanization and ecological environment of collaborative simulation and the changes of the environment and its relations with public health safety and etc. The systematic and fruitful research helped form a GIS teaching and scientific platform with own characteristic.

II. Educational Objectives

The major is designed to cultivate specialized talents with geographical basic knowledge, basic theory, professional skill of GIS, receiving scientific thinking training, mastering the ability of geographical data acquisition, data management, data analysis and data application. The high-quality complex talents are expected to be competent in studying or teaching in institute, college, entrepreneur or government departments engaged in GIS fields.

III. Basic Requirements

Graduates of this major are expected to have the following knowledgeand skills:

1) to have sound personalities and figures, good morality, high social responsibility, awareness of teamwork and proficiency in organization, management and adapting to new environment.

2) to be proficient in basic theories, knowledge and skills of satellite remote sensing, remote sensing image computation processing and geographical information extraction, GIS and systematic design and integration of GIS, spatial analysis method and utilization of GIS tool software.

3) to know the frontier issues in the field of earth information science, to be capable of collecting, analyzing and processing geographical information in urban and environmental science; solving common technical problems in earth information science; obtaining the approach of documentary inquiry, bibliographic retrieval and acquiring information by modern information technology; composing academic paper.

4) to have a good command of one foreign language.

2. Community Education

1) Each student should gain four credits.

2) The credits admitted by the College of Urban & Environmental Sciences are as follows:

a) Credits for research, including three credits for the first participators completing College Students’ Project of Innovation and Business-starting, two credits for the second participator and one credit for the third and the fourth participators respectively; three credits for an author of the paper published in the journals admitted by CCNU; two credits for those who take part in a teacher’s research project and write report.

b) Credits for reward, including three credits for the rewards above provincial level(e.g. National College English Competition, National GIS Competition, Tour Guide Competition etc.), one credit for the rewards of CCNU (e.g. Merit Students).

c) Credits for certificates, including two credits for a professional certificate (e.g. Teacher Qualification Certification, Environmental Impact Appraiser, Urban Planning Designer, Tour Guide Certificate, etc. ), or for a skill certificate (e.g. Certificate for CET-6, Computer Certificate Level II, etc.).

d) Credits for academic lectures, including one credit for attending eight academic lectures and submitting reports during term 1 to 7.

e) Credits for business-starting activities, including two credits for the business-starting program proposed by students and admitted by the teaching office of the College and implemented for three months or more.

f) Credits for community service, including two credits for the community service program proposed by students and admitted by the teaching office of the College and implemented for three months or more.

3) Each teach should spend one hour (i.e. altogether 150 to 160 hours for three years) in instructing students’ community activities.

IX. Explanations

1)The total credits required for the course is 158, including 130 in the class.

2)College English set for 12 credits, the implementation of enrolling test, basic level (grade C), improve the level (Level B) and development (Grade A) grade three class teaching. The implementation plan of the College English Graded Teaching in CCNU. C grade three semester a total of 12 credits of general English courses, grade B open 2, 8 semester credits of general English course and one semester four credits of English general education curriculum, class a open a semester 4 credits of general English course and one semester 4 credits of English through general education courses and 1 semester 4 credits of Special English course. Another provision of all students in the school during the study period, in principle, to repair the 1-2 door of the professional English course.

3)Freshman seminar, set 2 credits, the specific arrangements for the school "freshman seminar program" provisions.

4)The implementation of the university sports club teaching system, take at least 4 semesters, a total of 4 credits of the club course. The specific courses rules by the school sports club "university courses" to formulate rules.

5)Information application ability must be recognized by the school, before graduation. Recognized qualification can have three ways: one is enrollment by school organization of the school test; the second is access to the National Computer Rank Examination Certificate; third is to test unqualified or do not have access to the relevant certificates, required elective school opened the information application ability "course, and pass the examination.

6)The reading method of the core course of general education is stipulated by the school, "the credit is compulsory, the course is optional", and the course is divided into modules by the students from the core curriculum of general education in the school. Students must take 8 credits of general education core curriculum. The students in the mathematics and natural science, philosophy and Social Sciences, humanities and arts, education science and psychology of four modules in studying and get eight credits must be covering the above three modules, courses may not be the professional courses and the repetitive or similar.

7)General General Education Electives 2 credits can by students in school through general education core curriculum and general education core curriculum building outside the general education elective courses to choose studying, choose studying module from the current general education elective course construction classification constraints, optional courses. Can the students choose other professional courses outside of professional reading.

8)Quality development course 5 credits including the situation and policy course, the employment guidance course, college students' psychological health class, etc.

9)Requirements: the professional personality development course into academic and professional cross compound, three types of innovation and entrepreneurship. The selection of professional and academic development of students should be revised to read professional 25 credits of elective courses; select cross compound development of students enrolled in 25 credits of elective courses, elective courses can be in a school wide free elective, development innovation and entrepreneurship students enrolled in 25 credits to innovation and entrepreneurship courses elective courses.

10)Practical education, including natural and geographical field integrated practice for 2 credits, graduation thesis (Design) for 6 credits, 16 credits for graduation practice, 4 community education platform credits.

11)2015 students in the school must be at least 2 mixed teaching classroom courses to graduate.

12)The students must be in the prescribed length of schooling within full provisions of the credit, the credit courses to 130 credits, according to the requirements of practice teaching link 28 credits, foreign language test scores with Huazhong Normal University graduates, the thesis defense, granted graduation. In accordance with the conditions of the school degree granted, granted a bachelor's degree in science.

13)Access to the professional minor double degree courses, credit requirements are 28 credits and 42 credits.

1. The total course credit is defined as 158, of which 130 curricular credits.

2. There are 12 credits for College English, there is also an Entrance Examination, which classified by Progressive level (C), Proficient level (B) and Advanced level (A). For details to see "Central China Normal University College English Teaching embodiment." C-level needs three semesters of 12 credits for General English, B-level needs two semesters of 8 credits for General English courses and one semester of 4 credits for General Education courses in English, A-level needs a semester of 4 credits of General English course, a semester of 4 credits of General Education courses in English and one semester of 4 credits for English for Specific Purposes. In addition, all students are stipulated to take 1-2 English courses for the major field as elective courses,

4. The P.E class implements class teaching system, students need at least 4 credits for 4 semesters. Specific rules are established by the school ,please read " Implementation scheme of College P.E class " for more details.

5. Student’s computer skill needs to be authenticated by the school. There are three ways to authenticate :NO.1, to participate in computer test organized by the school;NO.2, to obtain National Computer Rank Examination certification; NO.3, one who fails to meet the conditions above needs to take computer course and pass the examination.

6. The study of general education core courses measures shall be formulated by the school. The credits are compulsory while the courses are elective. Students could choose optional modules from school core course catalog. Students must take eight credits of general core curriculum. A degree in this field could choose the courses from math and nature science, philosophy and social science, humanity and art, education and psychology. The eight credits must cover more than three modules above. The courses you select should not repeat or be similar with the professional courses.

7..Students can choose the two credits about general education elective courses from school's general education core courses or besides it. Optional modules will not be restricted by current general education elective courses classification. Students have the access to free elective and they can also choose to take courses outside of their major.

8.The five credits about quality of education include situation policy courses, employment guidance courses and college students' mental health courses.

9.The followings are requirements about personality development courses. The course system of the program is composed of professional academic, interdisciplinary courses and innovative entrepreneurial. Students who choose professional academic should get 25 credits for the professional elective courses. Students who choose interdisciplinary courses should get 25 credits for free elective courses. The courses can be selected within the whole school. Students who choose innovative entrepreneurial should get 25 credits about courses major in innovative entrepreneurial.

10. There are 2 credits for physical geography field practice, 6credits for graduation thesis, 16credits for graduation field work and 4 credits for community education platform in social practice.

11.The class of 2015 students must learn at least 2 hybrid education courses before graduate during the period of their school time.

12.A degree in this field must get the required credits in the required time. Courses credits should reach 130 and the practice credits should reach 28.Foreign language exam result is accord with the requirement of undergraduate students in Central China Normal University.

13.The required credits about professional elective courses and double degree courses are 28 and 42.
