CCNU students to participate in voluntary service in the Philippines for community resilience

From June 28th to July 11th, 2014, six students and one teacher from CCNU will be attending a three-day conference for United Board (UB) Faculty and International Service Learning Students, followed by a 12-day service-learning program in the Visayas Communities of the Philippines. Their trip is sponsored by UB for Christian Higher Education in Asia, with an additional 3,000 yuan scholarship from CCNU for each of them.

This community service project, Disaster Response, Community Resilience and the Role of Asian Universities, is organized by UB, in response to the super-typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda that ravaged the Visayas region in mid-November last year. The goal is to provide opportunities for UB partner institutions in Asia to express solidarity with friends in the Philippines by sharing knowledge, skills and practical assistance to communities affected by Haiyan.

University students from around Asia will learn about community resilience and the role of external assistance in the aftermath of natural disasters. It is the first time for the CCNU team, including a teacher and four graduate students from the School of Social Sciences, to participate in overseas voluntary service projects. They’re planning for service in the surrounding communities of UB partner universities including Central Philippine University.
