CCNU Chinese History Team of Hosted Session on XVIII World Economic History Congress

Recently, the XVIII World Economic History Congress ( WEHC ) on the theme of "Waves of Globalization " was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Over 200 sessions were held, covering the fields of history, economics, sociology, demography, environmental science and so on. More than 1,000 scholars from various countries participated in the congress.



CCNU Chinese history team hosted a parallel session on the theme of Businessmen and Commerce, Exchange, Interaction and Evolution of Organizations in the Pacific Rim since the 19th Century, and attracted wide attention among the participants  on the congress. Professor Ma Min, Director of the Institute of Modern Chinese History, Professor Li Peide, Vice-President of the Institute of Asian Studies convened the seminar, Professor Takeshi Hamashita, distinguished Japanese scholar, visiting professor of CCNU , President of the Institute of Asian Studies, Professor Li Zhongqing of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Professor Wang Guobin of the University of California, Los Angeles, were invited as commentator.



During his visit, Professor Ma Min was invited to hold talks with Professor Li Ruohong, vice president of Harvard-Yenching Institute. The two sides had in-depth exchanges and reached agreements on the selection of young teachers and doctoral candidates from CCNU to compete for the Harvard-Yenching Scholarship Program, the joint training of young scholars of Indian Chinese Studies, the selection of teachers from CCNU to apply for the Harvard-Yenching South Asia Research Program (mainly for Indian studies), and the joint holding of conferences. Professor Ma Min also invited Professor Li Ruohong to visit CCNU in October this year to introduce the relevant scholarship programs of Harvard-Yenching Institute.


It is reported that the WEHC, founded in 1960, is an international academic organization in the field of broad economic history and related disciplines. It has 45 membership organizations in more than 40 countries and regions around the world. Since 2013, CCNU Professor Ma Min has been a member of the Executive Committee of the organization. The next World Economic History Congress will be held in Paris, France, in 2021.
