Key Research Bases of Humanities and Social Sciences under the Ministry of Education:
1. Introduction to the Institute of China Rural Studies
Being a specialized academic institution focusing on the study of rural and peasants issues in the process of modernization, the Institute of China Rural Studies of Central China Normal University has been listed as the world-class discipline construction unit in the field of political science and approved as the Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences by the Ministry of Education. And it is also a contracted think tank with the Ministry of Education. In 2016, the institute was selected as one of the first source think tanks of China Think Tank Index (CTTI). In 2017, it was selected as one of the initiators of High-end Think Tanks Alliance of Chinese Higher Institutions by the Ministry of Education. Over the past decade, more than 10 papers written by the institute members have been published inSocial Sciences in ChinaandCASS Journal of Political Science. In addition, it has undertaken 13 major national research projects, 4 key projects funded by National Social Science Fund of China, and a few other projects which are over 10 in number, including the general projects of National Social Science Fund as well as the provincial and ministerial ones. So far more than 500 consultative reports raised by the institute have been submitted to governments at all levels, receiving more than 400 approvals, adoptions and citations. Moreover, 40 volumes ofZhongguo Nongcun Diaocha(China Rural Survey) composed by the institute members under the “Three-Gorge Project for Academic Studies” and 9 volumes ofMantie Nongcun Diaocha(Rural Survey by South Manchurian Railway Company in China) edited and translated by the institute members under the “Three-Gorge Project for Translation” have been published.

2.Introduction to the Research Center for Language and Language Education
Founded in May, 1999, the Research Center for Language and Language Education (RCLLE) of Central China Normal University is a Key Research Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences under the Ministry of Education. There are two research areas for RCLLE: the study of Chinese language and the study in language teaching with Chinese Language and Literature being a world-class discipline. Doctoral programmes in five disciplines were set up in the center: Chinese Philosophy, Linguistics and Applied Language, Comparative Study of Chinese and Foreign Languages, Chinese Information Processing, and Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. The center has carried out over 80 projects funded by National Social Science Fund of China, with research funds approved amounting to more than 9 million RMB. In addition, 70-odd books written by the research staff were published by the Commercial Press, Zhonghua Book Company, and other major publishers in China. Over 600 papers were published inZhongguo Yuwen(Chinese Language) and other academic journals. Altogether, the research staff have been awarded more than 30 high-level prizes, among which Professor Xing Fuyi has received 4 times from the Ministry of Education the first prize of Outstanding Achievements on Scientific Studies (Humanities and Social Sciences) of Chinese Advanced Research Institutions .

3. Introduction to the Institute of Modern Chinese History
The Institute of Modern Chinese History was founded in 1984 by Professor Zhang Kaiyuan, a famous historian and the former president of CCNU, and was approved as a key research base for humanities and social sciences of regular universities by the Ministry of Education in 2000. The institute consists of nine research offices, including the Office of Political History and the Office of Social Economic History. It has set up three academic journals, namely,Journal of Modern History,Big Data and Chinese Historical Research, andIndustrial Culture Research. It takes initiative in establishing a new disciplinary system of modern Chinese history with new ideas, new vision, and new methods from a global perspective. It also takes the lead in expanding the horizons of the characteristic research on the history of the 1911 Revolution, early Chinese modernization, the history of the Chamber of Commerce, the history of expositions, the history of rural handicrafts, the history of modern social groups, the history of church universities, the history of Christian religions, and so on—all of which have had a wide impact on the academic circles both at home and abroad. The institute members have published more than 80 academic works, undertaken 28 Major Projects for Research Bases under the Ministry of Education and 32 projects sponsored by the National Social Science Foundation of China. Some of its research findings have been awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award for Scientific Research (Humanities and Social Sciences) of Higher Education Institutes and the Outstanding Achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences of Hubei Province.

National Key Research Base for Teaching Materials:
Key Research Base for National History Textbooks for Primary and Secondary (Vocational) Schools
TheKey Research Base for National History Textbooks for Primary and Secondary (Vocational) Schoolsis one of the first batch of the 11 key research bases established by the Ministry of Education. It is now the only one on textbook research in China. On January 31, 2019, according toNotice by the Ministry of Education on the Confirmation of the First National Key Research Base for Textbook Construction, the base was formally approved for its debut. On October 27, the base held its inaugural meeting at CCNU. The base implements the director responsibility system, with an academic committee being established and Professor Xu Lan being choosen as the chair of the committee. The base has set up a professional think tank composed of experts, scholars, and professional top talents who are specialized in history textbooks, especially in the construction and development of the primary and secondary school history textbooks to carry out the relevant theoretical and practical research work, and the related talent cultivation as well.
